Find of the Month
One of the benefits of membership is the opportunity to enter treasures in
competition against other members' treasures for the monthly Finds of the Month.
At the monthly Eureka! club meeting, a prize is awarded to the member whose
entry is voted the best find in each of five categories since the previous
month's meeting. The five categories are:
- Artifact: A simple object showing human workmanship or modification.
- Coin: A piece of metal issued by governmental authority as money.
- Gold: Natural gold (for example, flakes, nuggets, wire), a stamped
karat alloy content or obvious custom alloy item, or a gold coin (of any
nationality).
- Jewelry: An object of precious metal, often set with gems, worn for
personal adornment (except jewelry qualifying for the "Gold" category).
- Token: A piece resembling a coin issued as money by some person or
body not of a governmental authority that could be redeemed for services or
special items.
Gold-plated items are not considered eligible
for the Gold category, but may be placed in the artifact, coin, jewelry, or
token category as appropriate. A designated board member settles any category
disputes. Each member is encouraged to enter his or her best finds in
any or all categories. It is not necessary for a metal detector to have been
used to locate or retrieve the find. You are not restricted as to the location
of the find, which allows your vacation finds to be entered. Each find, however,
must have been found the day after the last meeting through the current meeting
date, and true to the "spirit" of the hobby (that is, no entries "found" by
cleaning out the basement or searching thrift, pawn, or antique stores, for
example, may be entered). Nothing planted in an organized hunt may be
entered. At the meeting, a table is set up for logging and displaying
the entries. A member will attend the table to hand out entry forms and to log
your entry into the appropriate category. Only forms provided by the club are
allowed for entering Finds of the Month. An additonal display of a single 8.5-
by 11-inch piece of paper is permitted. Your entry is judged on its own merit.
All members are asked to be extremely careful while viewing these
finds. Some finds are quite valuable and fragile. Plan to arrive at
the meetings in time to enter your finds into the competition. All entries must
be submitted by the time the meeting is called to order at 7:30 p.m.
Entries for Finds of the Month remain displayed through the break to allow all
members a chance to view and vote. Voting is by members only. Immediately after
the break, votes are tallied and the winners announced. All ties will be broken
by the club president. All winning finds become eligible for entry in
the Finds of the Year competition held in January.
